What We Believe About Baptism
What Is Baptism?
Common Questions About Baptism
Is baptism required for salvation?
Can my child or infant be baptized?
Should I get re-baptized if I was baptized as an infant?
What We Believe About Baptism
1. Baptism Is a Personal Decision
-
We do not practice infant baptism.
-
We believe a person must be old enough to understand the decision to follow Jesus.
-
Baptism is for those who can personally choose to put their faith in Christ.
2. Baptism Is an Outward Sign of Inward Faith
-
Baptism is a public declaration of a personal commitment to Jesus.
-
It is a visible expression of a spiritual transformation that has already taken place in the heart.
3. Baptism Is by Full Immersion
-
We baptize by full immersion in water, just as Jesus was.
-
Going under the water symbolizes:
-
Jesus’ death and burial
-
The washing away of our old life of sin
-
-
Coming up from the water symbolizes:
-
Jesus’ resurrection
-
A new life in Christ
-
4. Children Are Dedicated, Not Baptized
-
We do not baptize young children who cannot yet grasp the meaning of salvation and baptism.
-
Instead, we invite parents to participate in a Child Dedication ceremony:
-
Parents commit to raise their child in the ways of the Lord.
-
The church community commits to support the family spiritually.
-
5. Following the Example of Jesus
-
Jesus was presented at the temple by His parents as a baby (Luke 2:22).
-
He was later baptized as an adult to begin His public ministry (Matthew 3:13–17).
-
We follow this same pattern: dedication in infancy, baptism by choice later in life.
